The Five Colors of Magic (WUBRG)
Every player has a "Color Identity." Find yours:
White: The Shield
Peace through OrderPhilosophy: Peace and protection. White wants a world where everyone follows the rules and looks out for one another.
Gameplay Strengths: "Weenie" strategies (armies of small creatures), life gain, enchantments, and "taxing" effects that make things more expensive for opponents.
Signature Move: White is the king of board wipes—spells like Wrath of God that destroy everything to restore a "fair" balance.
2026 Meta Highlight: White continues to dominate Vehicle strategies from Aetherdrift, but Lorwyn Eclipsed has added powerful Kithkin tribal synergies—cheap, resilient creatures that protect each other. Foundations reprints like Swords to Plowshares have also strengthened White's removal suite.
Do you like rules and armies? Go White.
Blue: The Mind
Perfection through KnowledgePhilosophy: Perfection. Blue looks at the world as a series of puzzles. It doesn't want to fight; it wants to know.
Gameplay Strengths: Drawing cards, "Counterspells" (stopping a spell before it happens), and "Bouncing" permanents back to the opponent's hand.
Signature Move: Blue players love to keep their mana open, forcing the opponent to wonder: "Does he have a counterspell, or is he bluffing?"
2026 Meta Highlight: Blue's Tarkir Prowess core remains strong, but Lorwyn Eclipsed Faeries have given Blue a dominant flash-tribal package—playing creatures on the opponent's turn while holding up counters. Foundations brought back key counterspell staples, making Blue's permission game sharper than ever.
Do you like outsmarting everyone? Go Blue.
Black: The Ambition
Power at Any CostPhilosophy: Opportunity. Black isn't necessarily "evil," but it is willing to do whatever it takes. It views morality as a cage that keeps you from winning.
Gameplay Strengths: Killing creatures directly, discarding cards from the opponent's hand, and using the graveyard as a second hand.
Signature Move: Black will often "pay" with its own life points or sacrifice its own creatures to gain a massive advantage.
2026 Meta Highlight: Recursion remains king in 2026. Black's "Corpse-Fuel" mechanics pair perfectly with Lorwyn Eclipsed Changelings that fuel graveyard synergies across tribes. Foundations reprints like Go for the Throat have restored classic removal staples to the format.
Do you like winning no matter the cost? Go Black.
Red: The Heart
Freedom through ActionPhilosophy: Freedom. Red hates rules, plans, and waiting. It wants to act, feel, and destroy right now.
Gameplay Strengths: "Burn" spells (dealing direct damage), creatures with Haste (they attack the turn they are played), and destroying artifacts.
Signature Move: Red is the fastest color. It tries to win before the other colors even have their mana ready.
2026 Meta Highlight: Red keeps its Dragon identity from Dragonstorm, but Lorwyn Eclipsed Elementals have added explosive tribal aggro options. Foundations reprints of burn staples like Lightning Bolt have made Red's direct damage package the most efficient it's been in years.
Do you like fire and speed? Go Red.
Green: The Wild
Growth through InstinctPhilosophy: Acceptance. Green doesn't want to change the world; it wants to thrive in it. Survival of the fittest is the only law.
Gameplay Strengths: "Ramp" (getting extra mana), playing the largest creatures in the game, and destroying "unnatural" things like artifacts and enchantments.
Signature Move: While Red is fast, Green is unstoppable. Once Green gets its mana engine moving, it produces threats too large for most colors to block.
2026 Meta Highlight: Green's Evolutionary Ward remains potent, but Lorwyn Eclipsed Treefolk have introduced a new ramp-tribal hybrid—creatures that both accelerate mana and hit hard. Foundations reprinted essential mana dorks and land-search spells, making Green's ramp engine more consistent than ever.
Do you like giant monsters and nature? Go Green.
The Best Two-Color Pairings for Beginners
Once you know the colors, it's time to combine them. Sticking to two colors as a beginner is a recipe for fun and consistency.
Red/Green
(Gruul)Fast Aggression: Uses Green's ability to "Ramp" (get mana fast) to cast Red's aggressive, hasty creatures or Green's big monsters ahead of schedule.
Very straightforward strategy: Attack and smash.
White/Blue
(Azorius)Defensive Control: Uses White's protection and healing with Blue's ability to counter spells. A slower, defensive style.
Can be confusing due to lots of "counter" and "draw" spells.
Black/Red
(Rakdos)Sacrifice/Direct Damage: Uses Red's aggressive creatures and Black's powerful creature removal. Focuses on quick, painful action.
Aggressive, simple plan: kill their stuff, then attack.
Green/White
(Selesnya)Token/Life Gain: Uses White to create swarms of small creatures (Tokens) and Green to make those small creatures huge.
Easy strategy: make a big army and attack with it.
