What is the Standard Format?
Standard is a rotating 60-card format. Unlike Modern or Commander, where you can play cards from twenty years ago, Standard only allows cards from the last few years of Magic's history.
It is the flagship format of Magic: The Gathering Arena and the centerpiece of Friday Night Magic at local stores. Because it only uses the most recently released sets, a deck that is unbeatable today might be completely different in three months.
The Basic Rules
60-Card Minimum
Your main deck must have at least 60 cards. Most competitive players stick to exactly 60 for maximum consistency.
15-Card Sideboard
In "Best of Three" matches, you use a sideboard to adapt to your opponent between games.
The 4-Copy Rule
You can play up to four copies of any card except Basic Lands. This ensures deck variety while allowing consistency.
The Card Pool
Standard consists of the most recent "Premier" sets—the main storyline releases from the last three years.
The Rotation Rule (The 3-Year Cycle)
To keep the game fresh and prevent the same decks from winning forever, Standard "Rotates." As of 2026, Standard operates on a three-year rotation.
Every year, when the "Fall" set is released, the oldest four sets in Standard leave the format. This "clears the table," forcing players to find new strategies and making room for new cards to shine.
This is great for beginners because you don't need to learn 30,000 cards; you only need to know the ones released in the last few years.
Why Play Standard?
A Level Playing Field
Because the card pool is smaller, it is much easier to catch up. You don't need expensive "Ancient" cards to be competitive. Most cards you need can be found in packs currently sitting on store shelves.
The Meta is Always Fresh
Standard changes every time a new set is released. If you find a particular strategy boring or frustrating, don't worry—new cards will likely arrive soon to shake things up.
High Availability
Whether you play on MTG Arena or at your local shop, finding a Standard game is easy. It is the most supported format for organized play and tournaments.
Standard Playstyles: Finding Your Fit
Because Standard is a "curated" environment, Wizards of the Coast ensures that all major playstyles are viable.
Aggro (White Weenie / Mono-Red)
Usually the best choice for beginners on a budget. These decks capitalize on the fact that other players are still trying to figure out the new "meta." Fast, efficient, and punishing.
Midrange (Golgari / Esper)
Often the strongest choice once a meta stabilizes. These decks play the "best individual cards" in the current legal sets, winning through sheer card quality.
Control (Azorius / Dimir)
These decks rely on the latest "Board Wipes" and "Counterspells." They often get stronger as more sets are added to the format, giving them more tools to answer threats.
The 2026 Standard Landscape
Standard currently features 18 legal sets spanning from late 2023 to early 2026. The next rotation happens January 1, 2027, when Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, and Murders at Karlov Manor rotate out.

Meta-Defining Releases
Lorwyn Eclipsed
The newest set (Jan 2026) brings back tribal synergies with Faeries, Kithkin, and Changelings. Efficient removal and the return of Spell Snare have reshaped midrange and control matchups overnight.
Aetherdrift
Introduced high-speed Vehicles and "Energy" as a primary resource. This set made Standard much faster — your deck needs to be doing something powerful by Turn 2 or Turn 3 to keep up.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm
The "Clan" system (Abzan, Jeskai, Sultai, Mardu, Temur) is back, meaning many players are running 3-color decks with complex mana bases and powerful Dragon payoffs.
How to Build Your First Standard Deck
Check Legality
Before you buy or trade for cards, use an online tool to ensure the cards are "Standard Legal." If a card was printed in a set from four years ago, it has likely rotated out.
Follow the "Rule of 9s"
To ensure your deck is consistent, pick 9 cards that support your strategy and play 4 copies of each (9 x 4 = 36 cards). Add 24 lands, and you have a solid, consistent 60-card deck. As you get better, you can tweak these numbers.
Sideboard for the Meta
In Standard, your 15-card sideboard is where you win the game. If you keep losing to fast Red decks, put cards in your sideboard that gain life or destroy small creatures. If you lose to slow Control decks, add cards that can't be countered.
Tips for the Rotating World
Don't Over-Invest Before Rotation
If a set is about to leave Standard in two months, focus on the newest sets that will stay legal for the full three years.
Watch the Pros
Standard is the most analyzed format. Look at recent tournament results to see which "Archetypes" are winning.
Arena is the Best Teacher
Use MTG Arena to test deck ideas for free before buying physical cards. It handles all the rules and rotation tracking for you.
Is Your Collection Standard Legal?
With rotation happening every year, it can be hard to keep track of which of your cards can actually be played at Friday Night Magic.
Our Deck Builder is updated in real-time with the Official 2026 Standard Legality List. It will scan your collection, filter out anything that has rotated, and highlight powerful cards you already own from Lorwyn Eclipsed, Aetherdrift, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and more.
