Fire Lord Azula copies every spell you cast while she's attacking and supplies two red mana when she attacks.

    What Fire Lord Azula does

Fire Lord Azula copies every spell you cast while she's attacking and supplies two red mana when she attacks.

That makes combat your main window for getting extra value from spells. You don't need to connect with a player: once Azula is attacking, each spell you cast triggers a copy, with new targets available. Firebending supplies {R}{R} that lasts until the end of combat, helping pay for spells during that window. It doesn't change timing permissions, though, so you still need a legal way to cast each spell.

The appeal is deciding how much to commit to each attack. Consider gives you another round of surveil and draw, while Chaos Warp can answer a second permanent. Meanwhile, Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer reward the original instant or sorcery casts, giving you damage and bodies alongside Azula's copies. You get a spells deck where combat matters for more than damage, and sequencing your hand matters as much as assembling your battlefield.

    How Fire Lord Azula plays

Early on, develop your mana and keep spells available for later attacks. Fellwar Stone helps with colors, while Consider and Brainstorm help shape your hand. Young Pyromancer turns subsequent instant and sorcery casts into bodies.

In the middle turns, attack with Azula when you can keep her alive. Resolve firebending before spending its mana, then cast spells while she's still attacking. Use copied draw to refill or copied Chaos Warp to address multiple permanents. Don't save everything for combat if you need an answer sooner.

Finish through repeated Guttersnipe damage, creature attacks, or Niv-Mizzet, Parun with Curiosity. That last pairing can repeat draws and damage without requiring Azula.

    Key staples

    Synergy pieces

    • Guttersnipe

      Guttersnipe

Deals 2 damage to each opponent for each instant or sorcery you cast; Azula's copies aren't casts and don't trigger it.

    • Return the Favor

      Return the Favor

Copies a spell or ability, changes a single target, or does both with the chosen additional costs; Azula copies those chosen modes without another payment.

    • Curiosity

      Curiosity

Turns enchanted-creature damage to opponents into optional draws, including the repeated draw-and-damage sequence with Niv-Mizzet, Parun.

    • Niv-Mizzet, Parun

      Niv-Mizzet, Parun

Draws cards from any player's instant and sorcery casts and turns your draws into damage, with Curiosity allowing that sequence to repeat.

    • Expressive Iteration

      Expressive Iteration

Sorts your top three cards into hand, library bottom, and a temporary playable exile card; Azula alone doesn't let you cast this sorcery during combat.

    • Stormcatch Mentor

      Stormcatch Mentor

Reduces your instant and sorcery costs by one generic mana, while haste and prowess give it a supporting combat role.

    • Flusterstorm

      Flusterstorm

Contests an instant or sorcery with multiple pay-one counters; Azula adds a copy, but that copy doesn't trigger storm again.

    Staples in these colors

    • Sol Ring

      Sol Ring

Provides two colorless mana for generic costs, leaving your colored sources available for Azula and your spells.

    • Arcane Signet

      Arcane Signet

Produces blue, black, or red mana to support Azula's three-color casting requirements.

    • Fellwar Stone

      Fellwar Stone

Adds mana in a color an opponent's land could produce, with its usefulness depending on the lands across the table.

    • Blasphemous Act

      Blasphemous Act

Gets cheaper as the battlefield fills and deals 13 damage to every creature, so plan around losing your own creatures too.

    • Chaos Warp

      Chaos Warp

Answers any permanent with a possible replacement from its owner's library; cast it while Azula attacks to copy it onto another target.

    Sample decks

    Budget build (~$40)

For the budget build, start with Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, or Fellwar Stone, then establish Stormcatch Mentor or Guttersnipe before committing to a busy combat. Expressive Iteration helps prepare your hand outside combat; don't assume Azula changes its timing. Once Azula attacks, use Chaos Warp and Return the Favor to make that casting window count. Guttersnipe rewards the spells you actually cast, not their copies, so several casts matter more than a pile of copies alone. If combat stalls, Niv-Mizzet, Parun plus Curiosity offers a separate finish. Use Blasphemous Act when resetting creatures is worth losing your own setup.

    Upgraded build (~$483)

For the upgraded build, keep the same Azula combat engine, but pay close attention to stack sequencing with Return the Favor and Flusterstorm. Lead with mana development from Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, and Sol Ring, then use Stormcatch Mentor to stretch your casting budget. Save Flusterstorm for an instant or sorcery that matters, especially after several spells have already been cast that turn. Azula's copies don't increase that storm count. Guttersnipe provides damage as you cast, while Niv-Mizzet, Parun and Curiosity supply an alternate finishing sequence. Keep Chaos Warp available for troublesome permanents rather than spending every resource on your own turn.

    Fire Lord Azula FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. She only needs to be attacking when you cast the spell. You can cast spells after attackers are declared, before blockers or combat damage. If you want to spend firebending's mana, let that trigger resolve first.
No. Her ability doesn't grant timing permission. You need another legal way to cast those spells during combat. If you do cast a permanent spell while she's attacking, she copies it, and the copy becomes a token as it resolves.
No. The copies aren't cast. Your original instant or sorcery triggers Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer, but its copy doesn't. Copying Flusterstorm also doesn't trigger storm again, and spell copies don't count as spells cast for future storm triggers.
Each Pact that resolves creates its own obligation to pay {3}{U}{U} at your next upkeep or lose the game. If both target the same spell, the first to resolve usually counters it, leaving the other without a legal target; that other Pact won't resolve or create a payment obligation.
Enchant Niv-Mizzet with Curiosity. A draw triggers his damage ability; deal that damage to an opponent, then use Curiosity to draw again and repeat. Curiosity's draw is optional, so you can stop. Your remaining library and opponents' life totals matter: this isn't unlimited damage without consuming cards.
