    What Atraxa, Praetors' Voice does

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice proliferates at your end step and brings flying, vigilance, deathtouch, and lifelink to combat.

Her triggered ability lets you choose any number of permanents and players, then add another counter of each kind they already have. That makes her a steady source of growth, but not a way to start counters from nothing. You want cards that establish counters before your end step, then enough interaction to keep that investment on the battlefield.

The clearest plan here is +1/+1 counters. Forgotten Ancient accumulates them as players cast spells and can distribute them during your upkeep, while Branching Evolution doubles the +1/+1 counters placed on your creatures. Atraxa turns those setups into recurring progress without requiring another spell each turn. Players who enjoy building a board over several turns get meaningful choices about where to put counters, when to commit more creatures, and when to leave mana available for removal.

    How Atraxa, Praetors' Voice plays

Early on, develop your colors with Cultivate and Farseek. Atraxa needs four different colors, so prioritize access to all four over a hand full of payoffs. Establish a source of counters before expecting proliferate to matter.

In the middle turns, deploy Atraxa when you can benefit from her end-step trigger. Forgotten Ancient can spread counters across your creatures during your upkeep. Keep removal available rather than committing every card in your hand.

Win through combat with creatures that keep growing. Atraxa's flying helps her attack, while vigilance leaves her available to block. In the upgraded list, Walking Ballista also converts its +1/+1 counters into damage, giving you a way to finish without attacking.

    Budget build (~$65)

The budget build's clearest counter engine is Forgotten Ancient. Let spells from around the table build its counters, then move some onto other creatures during your upkeep so Atraxa can proliferate across your board. Cultivate and Farseek help assemble her four-color cost; Harmonize provides a straightforward refill when you're running low. Sequence removal by its restrictions: use Despark on eligible permanents, Putrefy on artifacts or creatures, and preserve Beast Within for problems the others can't address. Don't empty your hand just to maximize one end step. A smaller board with counters and an answer available can keep making progress.

    Upgraded build (~$487)

In the upgraded build, Branching Evolution and Walking Ballista give you a concrete counter-to-damage plan. Start Ballista with counters, then let Atraxa add more; Branching Evolution doubles the +1/+1 counters being placed on your creatures. Ballista's four-mana ability also provides a way to add counters when you have mana available. Avoid spending its last counter casually, since proliferate needs an existing counter to build on. Cultivate and Farseek still support casting Atraxa, while Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and Beast Within answer opposing threats. Treat Sram, Senior Edificer as conditional draw: it needs Aura, Equipment, or Vehicle casts, not merely a growing board.

    Atraxa, Praetors' Voice FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. Proliferate only adds counters of kinds already present. Establish a +1/+1 counter first, such as by moving one from Forgotten Ancient during your upkeep.
It doesn't double the trigger. It doubles the +1/+1 counters that would be placed on creatures you control. A chosen creature with a +1/+1 counter therefore gets two more instead of one.
No. You choose any number of permanents and players, including none. However, for each one you choose, you add another counter of every kind already there, not just the kind you prefer.
No. Her ability triggers at the beginning of your end step only. She doesn't need to attack to provide that trigger.
Those abilities alone don't form an infinite loop. Atraxa provides an end-step proliferate trigger, Branching Evolution doubles the relevant counters placed, and Ballista can spend counters for damage. Its own counter-adding ability still costs four mana each time.
