The Modern Format: Power Without Rotation
Modern Format Guide
A deep dive into Magic's premier non-rotating competitive format. Learn the rules, staples, and strategies that define Modern.
Build a Modern DeckWhat is Modern?
Modern is a non-rotating constructed format where players build 60-card decks using cards printed from 8th Edition (July 2003) forward. Unlike Standard, your cards never "rotate out" - once you build a deck, it's legal forever (unless cards are banned).
Basic Rules
- Deck Size: Minimum 60 cards
- Sideboard: Up to 15 cards
- Card Copies: Maximum 4 copies of any card (except basic lands)
- Card Pool: 8th Edition (2003) onward, minus banned cards
The Turn 4 Rule
Wizards of the Coast designs Modern around the "Turn 4 Rule" - the idea that games should not be consistently decided before turn 4. This is why ultra-fast combo pieces tend to get banned. The format is meant to allow for interaction and counterplay.
The Mana Base is Everything
Modern's power comes from its mana base. Fetch lands and shock lands allow consistent 2-3 color mana bases. Cards like Flooded Strand and Steam Vents are format staples that enable the diverse strategies Modern is known for.
Key Land Types
- Fetch Lands: Search for other lands (e.g., Misty Rainforest)
- Shock Lands: Dual lands that can enter untapped for 2 life (e.g., Breeding Pool)
- Fast Lands: Enter untapped if you control 2 or fewer lands
- Triomes: Three-color lands with basic land types
